Ruben Johnson-Santiago

Ruben Sincere Santiago, a New London, CT native, overcame a challenging upbringing marked by instability and time in the foster care system due to domestic violence in his household. As the oldest of five siblings, he always sought to maintain family unity despite adversity. After serving time in prison for serious charges, including an attempted murder case in 1994 and later a federal offense, Santiago made a profound personal transformation following the tragic loss of his 16 year-old son to brain cancer in 2011. This turning point inspired him to dedicate his life to youth outreach and community advocacy. Santiago founded K.O.P. (Keeping Kids Out of Prison), through which he mentors young men, speaks in schools about the consequences of street life, and provides community support initiatives like free weekly breakfasts and toy drives for children with cancer. Since 2022, he has worked as a Peer Navigator for Ledge Light Health District, helping formerly incarcerated individuals reenter society. He is active in violence prevention efforts, serves in ministry at The Church at 207 Bank Street, and collaborates with local organizations to reduce violence and support those in need across New London.
